The Rumour Mill Is Churning: Amazon To Kill Off The Kindle?

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

Amazon now sells more kindle books than it does hard-copies, so why on earth would people think amazon is preparing to kill off the kindle? According to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon is preparing to launch an Android-based tablet that would ostensibly signal the end of the kindle. Amazon Kindle

Reports are that Amazon will make a big launch in October for its new tablet, and although new kindle models will be launched around the same time, many are declaring the kindle will be dead in a few more years.

Of course the move to get into the tablet market is a good one for Amazon. Cloud-based content is fast becoming the norm and e-readers have their deficiencies in this department. But would it make much sense to phase out production of the kindle? At this stage it is too early to tell; Amazon after all hasn't made any official announcements.

Amazon would also have to consider the considerable user-base it's developed over the years for the kindle. Getting all those people to migrate to a tablet might pose some problems.

E-Readers are also cheaper than tablets; indeed, this has been one of the reasons the kindle sells so well. At this stage there is too much at stake and too much uncertainty. The Wall Street Journal I am sure has credible sources, but I think it's safe to say that the Kindle will be around for a while longer.

eBay Accountable For Counterfeit Goods

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

eBay and other online retail outlets could be liable if users are selling counterfeit goods through the sites. This is according to the European Court of Justice last Tuesday as part of a ruling on a case filed by cosmetic company L'Oreal. ebaynet

The court said that operators of online marketplaces are not exempted from liability if they have information or control over the items sold on their web sites. It is unlawful for companies who fail to act in removing or blocking the said transactions from their web sites.

The European Court of Justice ruling was in response to a U. K. High Court's request for clarification with regards to issues concerning the obligations and liabilities of online marketplaces. The European Court ruled that European Union trademark rules apply to items sold from non-EU countries if they're targeting consumers from the EU.

L'Oreal said that it is satisfied with the ruling and is a positive step against counterfeit products on the internet. The ruling is in rule with the company's stance on the issue. It first notified eBay about its concerns in 2007. The company was not pleased with how the web site acted on its complaint and brought the issue to the High Court in London.

Google Ventures’ Rich Miner On Mobile Development

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

Google Ventures announced that it would invest in Crittercism, a SDK that provides customer support for mobile, and Astrid, a task manager app. The announcement was made by Rich Miner during the fourth annual MobileBeat conference by VentureBeat. rich miner

Miner talked about the non-existing Android fund. Kleiner Perkins has its Apple-focused iFund but Android startups are nowhere to be found. Miner said that it's all about mobile and this is evident with its new investments, which are both mobile companies.

Miner became a partner of Google Ventures after Google acquired Android, which he co-founded. He has seen the mobile phone market grow each year. He has 25 years of experience regarding businesses in communications and interface-based applications.

He spent his early years with Google developing the Android platform and its ecosystem. Before Android, Miner was Vice President at Orange, where he supervised R&D activities in North America and was the founding principal of Orange Ventures.

Six years ago, Android was treated as a separate startup in Google. It was self-funded when Google acquired it. Miner was impressed how Google's co-founders Larry Page, Eric Schmidt and Sergey Brin understood the mobile industry. They gave Android the right support and flexibility from the start.

Google+ Hits 10 Million Users: Fastest Growing Social Network Ever?

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

Google is going to destroy Facebook. At least that's what it looks like if the current estimate of its Google+ numbers hold up.

According to Paul Allen of Ancestry.com, Google+ is perhaps the fastest growing social network in the history of the web. His method for working this out is a bit ahead of the curve, so you'll have to stick with me as I "try" to explain it. Bear in mind too that Google hasn't published any official figures.

Here's how Mr Allen came up with the whopping figure:

The US Census Bureau has a pretty comprehensive list of surnames, so what Mr Allen did was take a sample of surnames from that database. He then compared that sample to a sample of surnames from the Google+ user base. The premise here is that the correlation between the surname popularity on both the census and Google+, should give a reasonable estimate of the number of users. He then did some further filtering by comparing the ratio of U.S. to non-U.S. users in order to get a clear picture of the number of people using the service worldwide. With me so far? Good!

By using this very "Paul Allen" methodology, Mr Allen worked out that Google+, since launch, now has over 10 million users. If you extrapolate those numbers (assuming a steady rate of growth), Google+ should have 60 million users by the end of the year. In another 2 years, that number would be well in excess of 300 million. Not even Facebook could boast such impressive numbers.

Google must now deliver on the promise of a "better, cooler" social network, and hope that Paul Allen isn't completely bunkers with his estimates.

Vellamo: Android Web Benchmark from Qualcomm

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

Vellamo works on all Android phones (2.2+)

Earlier today, I talked to Qualcomm's Sy Choudhury (Director, Product Management)  about Vellamo, a benchmarck aimed at measuring several aspects of web browsing performance: page rendering, Javascript execution, user experience, networking. This project originated from Qualcomm's desire to improve its own software. As one of the leading chip provider, Qualcomm does contribute quite of software in the Android eco-system, and Vellamo has started as an internal tool to quantify the performance gain in Qualcomm's own code.

The interesting part is that Vellamo is now available to the public. It is available for download today on the Android Market and should be upgraded every 9 months or so.

They say that thin is in, and we certainly would not want to argue with that. After all, turn on your HDTV and switch to an MTV channel, chances are you will see slim ladies swarming all over a big time gangsta rapper. The same principle does seem to apply to consumer electronics – have you noticed just how slim and thin these devices have become nowadays?

Well, Sony Optiarc America has decided to follow today’s trends with their first dual USB bus powered slim portable DVD/CD rewritable drive known as the Sony DRX-S90U, where it is meant to see action primarily with your notebook or netbook, although desktop computers can still have a date with it.

Cricket announces Kyocera Luno in the US

Posted: 14 Jul 2011 06:19 PM PDT

When it comes to smartphones in the US, the major mobile carriers have the largest monopoly over the kinds of devices, and even exclusivity in some cases. That is to be expected, but what about smaller mobile carriers such as Cricket? Well, they do have high end phones from time to time, but for most of them, mid-range handsets are their bread and butter. Take the Kyocera Luno for instance – surely you won't expect too much from a handset that retails for $59.99, do you?

This smartphone will fortunately come with Cricket's unlimited talk, text and mobile data service plans, keeping in line with the phone's budget-friendly price tag while delivering streamlined key features to keep you happy.
