| View Your Zip Online File with Google Docs Posted: 15 Jul 2011 08:02 PM PDT Consider this. Your friend sends you a 10 MB zip files as an email attachment and you are not too sure what files are inside that archive. It could be a slideshow with pictures of cute cats, that you would definitely not like to open, or maybe something more important. Earlier you would have to download that entire 10 MB files to your computer just to see whether it is of any use but not anymore. The Google Docs viewer, the standalone app and the version that comes integrated with Gmail, can now handle both .zip and .rar formats in the browser itself. That means you can browse the contents of an attached zip file online without having to download it. If there any Office documents or Photoshop files or even another zip file contained inside, you can view their content as well in the same Google Docs viewer window. There's another scenario where this feature will come handy. Say you want to download a zip or rar file from a website but before doing so, you would like to confirm what's inside the file. In that case, just copy the URL of the zip files and paste it into the Google Docs viewer like in this example. Google Docs can handle ZIP and RAR formats but for extracting other archive formats like gzip or for opening password-protected ZIPs in the browser, check this tool. |
| Developer Says Facebook Pirated His App Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:43 PM PDT Facebook teamed up with Skype last week to launch a new video chat app in the social networking site. It is found at facebook.com/videocalling. Now a company named Samuday Web Technologies said that it used to own the domain and its video chat app was removed from Facebook. It looked like Facebook paved the way for its own video calling service. Samuday's CEO Nimit Kumar said his video-calling app was found at facebook.com/videocalling from December 2010. Although it was not popular, there were around 22,000 users of the app. IT has 4,500 likes and received an average rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars. But last April 7, Samuday's app was removed by Facebook without any warning. The company tried to contact Facebook to find out what happened but it received a letter stating that the app was taken out because it violated Facebook policies. Samuday let it go until last week when Facebook launched its own video chat service on the old URL where Samuday's app was found. Kumar speculated that Facebook decided it wanted the URL and decided to remove the third party app to pave the way for its own app. Kumar is now thinking of filing a lawsuit against Facebook but his resources are limited. He has not been in contact with Facebook since the Skype video-calling app was launched. |
| Google Launches Photovine Photo Sharing Network Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:43 PM PDT Google is not done yet with launches. Just a few weeks after it rolled out its Google+ social network, it has begun the deployment of another one. This time around it is a social-networking photo service called Photovine. Google is silently launching Photovine, which lets users take photos from their phones and upload them to a photo stream. It is similar to how tweets flow in Twitter. No much is known about the new service but people are speculating that users could subscribe to someone else's Photovine and you could see their latest photos as soon as they upload them into the service. At present, Photovine is still closed. Its website has two buttons. One to request for an invite into the service and the other button is to watch the teaser for the service. According to Google, Photovine is a photo-sharing service that was made by Slide, which is a social-media company that it acquired in August. Photovine is launched right on the heels of Google+. It is still unclear whether the two services will be connected in the future. The video shows people taking photos with iPhones, which could mean that Photovine will be available for iOS devices. |
| Google Q2 Earnings Gets Boost from Google+ Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT Looks like Google's latest social network project is going towards the right direction. It has made a lot of buzz and managed to generate positive earnings for the company. It is getting ready to release its second quarter earnings report after the bell on July 14. Investors speculate that Google will report net revenue of $6.4 billion for the second quarter. This would make it a 28 percent increase from the previous year. The period also marks the first in which Google CEO Larry Page took the position from Eric Schmidt. Financial analysts are likely to question Google about how it would monetize its Google+ social network as well as issues regarding the current Federal Trade Commission probe on the company's search ad practices. Google was in the news in the past months because of the FTC antitrust investigations. This was until the company rolled out Google+. Now every news outlet is talking about Google's social network. While Google+ is still not contributing to the company's bottom line, it is on the right path to success. It has been estimated that about 10 million users are already on the new social network and the number could double over the weekend. |
| Fake Google+ Invites Spreading Like Wildfire On Facebook Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT Google and Facebook are engaged in an unending struggle with each other for online dominance, that much is obvious. What is not so obvious is the struggle that they both have with scammers. With each new feature, Google and Facebook find themselves constantly trying to weed out the cancerous deeds of people intent on disruption, or the lure for a quick buck. The latest scam involves Google+ invites, and the scammers seem to be using Facebook as leverage. Here's what they are up to: The scammers create a page titled "Google+ –Get Invite. The page comes complete with the number of likes… you know, to sucker you in with the old social proof trick. If 80,000 people like it, surely I should like it too? Only when you click the like button, a third-party application takes hold of your account. And that's when all sorts of funky and not-so-nice stuff happen. Not only will your account be used to send out spam messages, your personal data will also be stolen. Scams likes these will exist as long as Facebook and Google exists; it's up to users to be vigilant. The good thing is that similar to the viral nature of these scams, alerts to their existence can be just as viral. If you fall victim to the scam, a simple remedy is to unlike the page, disallow the application and report the matter to Facebook. In the meantime, be vigilant for future scams. As the battle between Google and Facebook improves in intensity, scammers will also increase their efforts. Watch the video below to see learn more about scams on Facebook.

| AT&T Taking Preorders For Facebook Ingrated HTC Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT There are several smartphones that will be released in the coming weeks that have dedicated Facebook buttons. It is ideal for taking photos and video chats. It has a smaller screen compared to other smartphones. It is 2.6 inches and has a resolution of 480 by 320 pixels. | Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT Google has hopes that its Google+ social network could dethrone Facebook. It has several good features, such as the video chat hangouts, ability to edit posts, and privacy measures. But there are some omissions that make people looking for more. Google+ is just a few weeks old and its user base is still growing. Google's social network is not perfect and there are some flaws found in it. One of which is its setting up Circles. Some users say that it is too much work and the setup interface is a little bit awkward. Google+ also offers little management options. Some people would like to have the option of reordering their circles in the Stream menu according to importance. People would also like an option that would let users exclude circles from a post, even if the post is set to Public. Google can also let people subscribe to a public circle, which is a circle that the owner opted to be open to the public. People can join the circle for various special interests. That way you could reach to total strangers who joined the public group on their own free wills. Google+ uses Gmail for personal messages. A user can send an email message from Google+ but to receive the message, the receiver must go to the Gmail site. |
| Google Maps traffic info discontinued? Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT It was only the other day we announced that Google had traffic information for some countries in Europe, and now it seems that was a short-lived feature. According to a Google Employee on the official Google Maps support forum, Google has decided to shut down its traffic info service for now – at least until it figures a way how to release an improved version of it. |
| StarCraft Universe (StarCraft 2 MMO mod) Gameplay Trailer released Posted: 15 Jul 2011 07:42 PM PDT One of the best things about games that come with official map editors or development kits is the content that comes from the modding community after the game is released. A lot of hit games have started off as small mods that gained massive success. Counter-Strike, Team Fortress, Enemy Territory and Defense of the Ancients – they all started out as user created mods that were created with the official tools. |
