| Google Enjoying A Sea Of Good Fortune With Android: 130 Million Devices And Counting Posted: 16 Jul 2011 04:35 PM PDT Google doesn't get it right all the time, but when it does, the results are usually stunning. In recent years, Google has dipped its hands in lots of pies, and one of its more ambitious endeavors is Android, the operating system for mobile phones and applications. When Android was first launched, critics complained that Google's desire to be all things to all men would not work. Most felt that Android wouldn't get enough partners to make it really compete with the likes of Apple's OS for mobile. Well, the critics were wrong. Fresh off Google's quarter 2 earnings announcement, it has been revealed that Android now powers over 130 million devices—and growing. According to Google's VP, Andy Rubin, Android is seeing a staggering 550,000 activations a day. Such numbers are very good considering that the leading mobile OS run by Apple has virtually cornered the market. This is really great news for Google's CEO, Larry Page, who took some flak for some of Google's more notable failures (Google Buzz is one example). And with things looking all rosy for the company's brand new social network, Google+, things are expected to get even better. Can Google keep this up? Only time will tell, but with the predicated growth in the mobile market, a steady handle on the Android steering wheel should add a few more billions to Google's coffers. Watch the video below to see how Android stacks up against the Apple IOS.

| Amazon To Launch Tablet In October Posted: 16 Jul 2011 04:35 PM PDT Amazon is set to release its Android tablet in October. Although the reports are not confirmed by the online retailer, this could fulfill the speculations that the company has plans to come out with its own tablet. The Amazon tablet will feature a nine inch touchscreen but it wouldn't have a camera. It gives the user access to Amazon's media collection. The company is also reported to be coming out with two versions of its Kindle electronic reader in the third quarter of 2011. Speculations about the Amazon tablet have persisted in the past months. It is set to compete with Apple's iPad and other Android tablets in the market. The tablet could give users easy access to Amazon's storefront and could have exclusive features, such as one-click purchasing, recommendation engine and Amazon Prime Service. According to some analysts, Amazon can sell up to 2.4 million Android tablets in 2012 if the company launches one late this year. Last June, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos told the audience at the company's shareholders meeting that he is excited about the potentials that a tablet can bring to the company. Despite the buzz regarding the Amazon tablet, the company was more concerned about the upcoming versions of the Kindle e-reader. On July 13, Amazon launched an ad supported version of Kindle 3G for $139 from AT&T. |
| Dallas City Hall Workers Reprimanded For Spending Too Much Time on Facebook Posted: 16 Jul 2011 04:35 PM PDT According to reports, city hall employees in Dallas spend too much of their idle time in Facebook. At least 50 were reprimanded for spending a large amount of their office hours on the social network. One of those who were reprimanded for being on Facebook while at work is Cesar Baptista, who is the assistant director in the water department. According to city hall officials, Baptista's Facebook page was open for 68 hours in the last three months. Baptista said that he didn't spend all those hours in Facebook. He said that he opened the site in the morning and left it there without closing the page. According to Dallas City Manager Mary Suhm, computer equipment and employees' time during office hours belong to the company. She added that employees are not allowed to do personal business when they're being paid by the taxpayers. As punishment for spending time on Facebook at work, the erring city hall workers got varying punishments. Some were offered counseling, while the more serious punishments are up to the manager's decision. Dallas City Spokesperson Frank Librio said that the city is finalizing its social media policy. City employees are not allowed to use social media while on the job. |
