Music Fans Will Love Google+

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

Music fans might flock towards Google+ when it opens up to the public and leave Facebook behind. While Facebook is an excellent platform for sharing music, it lacks in some areas. Google+ might be late coming into the social networking market but it could make waves in the music front. Music-Fans

Google+ can make meet and greet sessions possible through its Hangout feature. Google has the budget to invite celebrities to do exclusive concerts for the fans. The company can record these interactions and archive them on YouTube. Speaking of YouTube, it has become the home of live online music events. These concerts could be held in Google+ in the future, with lots of interaction happening in real time.

Facebook likes its users upload photos and videos but it doesn't have an option for music uploads. Google has its own Music Beta and its engineers can easily incorporate it into Google+. Google engineers could make music collection searchable on Google+. This could be a way to find like-minded people. Music streams will allow people to listen to other users' music.

Google+ has a lot of advantage over Facebook. One of which is that Google owns a mobile operating system. Its engineers could probably figure a way to use Android APIs to integrate Google+ and music apps better than Facebook.

Personalize Your Google+ Profile URL

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

There are people who want to share their Google+ profiles are having a hard time doing so because at present the extension is a long string of random numbers. But there is a way to shorten your Google+ profile URL. google profiles

The current Google+ profile URL looks like the ancient Facebook profile URL before it allowed users to personalize it. The current Google+ URL is difficult to share because of the long random numbers. Google's newest attempt at a social network is still in field testing stage and this might be the reason why it doesn't let users shorten the URL for now.

Google even said that it would allow users to get vanity URLs in Google+ later when it is available to the public. But until that day comes, users can go to a third party service that will shorten Google+ profile URLs.

Google Plus Nick is a web-based app that can turn the long Google+ URL into the gplus.to/username format. Just go to the app's web site and enter the long string of numbers that correspond to your Google+ profile. Then choose a username. It can be as short as three characters and a maximum of 25 characters. It should not contain numbers or special characters. Then click on add and you now have a shortened URL of your Google+ URL.

Youtube Unveils The Cosmic Panda & Things Look Stunning!

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

One thing is obvious, the people over at Google/Youtube are not resting on their laurels. In what you could call a stunning video coup de tat, Youtube unveiled today a revamped (experimental) design, dubbed "Cosmic Panda".

The intro page to Cosmic Panda is worded with subtlety, but the redesign itself is anything but subtle. User opinions will differ, but my initial reaction was "wow!". The new design is slick, bold and modern; it has that "carbon" web 2.0 look and feel and definitely makes you want to stick around.

Youtube Cosmic PandaOf course the people at Youtube are always making tweaks here and there. In January of 2010, Youtube unveiled a new "watch page" and of course channel design has its fair share of tweaks over the years too. But Cosmic Panda is truly a step into the ultra-modern era of online video. The player itself is set against a dark background which helps to give focus to the video. Channels have a slicker look, although I did notice that a URL on my channel wasn't "clickable".

I am sure it wasn't intentional (*cough*), but I couldn't help noticing how much more the ads on videos stand out. They seem to be almost inviting me to click. Like I said, I am sure this very visible benefit to Youtube's bottom line isn't intentional. Chicanery aside, Youtube delivers a ton of value for free, so I am sure its users won't mind.

I am sure there will be lots to see as the feedback data is analysed, I for one am not switching back to the "old" Youtube, this one is too blissful.

If you haven't seen the new Youtube, watch the video below to see what the fuss is about.

Facebook With Video Calls Is A Massive Hit With Users

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

As the battle for online supremacy rages on, the two main protagonists, Facebook and Google, seem to be scoring point after point. It's becoming rather difficult to keep up lately. Facebook for instance has been very busy this past week, and its newly integrated video chat partnership with Skype seems to be a hit with users. Facebook Video Calling With Skype

Facebook users are not always accepting of changes, but this one seems to be going down quite well. And while some people have cited their annoyance at not being able to make group video calls, the majority of users are happy that they can now have a video chat hook-up with their buddy across town.

According to the social media monitoring site Famecount, Skype has seen a marked increase in it's popularity among Facebook users. Since the partnership was unveiled on July 6, Skype has had a whopping 13,000 increase on it's fan page. This surge in popularity also pushes them up to 20th in the rankings for new fans gained in a day.

As corporate marriages go, this one seems to be made in heaven, or should I say Silicon Valley? Whatever the case, the benefits to both parties are quite obvious; and with Google yet to show it's hand fully with Google+, Facebook especially needs to keep scoring points.

As of the 7th July 2011, the score, for anyone interested is Facebook 302 – Google 300. Game on!

Watch the video below to see how things look on Facebook video chat.

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

Amazon.com tries to make its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player more attractive to consumers by adding new offers to them. The company now gives unlimited space for music in the Cloud Drive storage for subscribers who would pay at least $20 a year. Amazon

It would also include offer free storage for all MP3 files bought from Amazon and access to stored music on an iPad. This is according to a statement issued by the company. It hopes that with this move consumers will choose its services over others.

The online retail company's services allow users to store their music catalog into an Amazon Cloud Drive. They can also opt to place other types of files and data in the cloud. The users can play back their music through Amazon's Cloud Player. The player can be accessed via any web browser. There is also a Cloud Play app for Android smartphones and tablets.

Amazon is the first among the major companies to launch a cloud service. It launched the Cloud Drive and Cloud Player last March ahead of its rivals Appla and Google. Google unveiled its Music Beta music storage service last May. Apple was the last to release its cloud service called iCloud.

Tonehighway.com’s New Looks

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

Do you remember Tonehighway? Last time DailySocial wrote about this web based music player, is on Sepetember last year. Now they have new design and new facility. If looking at their Facebook account , they’ve applied their new design at the end of may 2011.

Tonehighway enables their user to listen to music collection (mostly sidestream music) while reading about information on the musician such as, biography, show schedule, images, etc. users can also share their favorite music to their chosen social networks.

It is a significant change because they revamped almost everything including how users can interact with their service. If previously their design was focused on being music player, now it looks more like social network with “bar” to play music on the lower side, which continuously play music while users browse about the musician’s information.

At homepage you will see a merrier looks than previous Tonehighway, here you can choose various facilities, choose artist from ther profile picture, see the last track played by other users and check list of music genre and you can also see list of the latest active users in Tonehighway.

You can directly choose your favorite artists and listen to the music available there. Music player’s design and looks is now on the lower side using “bar” with gradation effect to show song list on your playlist, so when you browse through the artist’s profile, the looks will not be a bothersome.

You can also create playlist from various tracks in Tonehighway’s collection, of course you need to login to enjoy the facility. Other than that, there’s a queuing facility that enables you to create song list to accompany your internet activity. This could be one of the facilities I like most.

Back to homepage, you can also browse other facilities or information available on Tonehighway through menu option on the upper side, including the option to see and create playlist. Tonehighway also provide songs recommendation for their users. There’s also a social facility like recommendation, becoming fans of certain musician or 'Like".

I do agree with some friends, that their old looks reminded me of TheSixtyOne.com while the new one reminds me of Groveshark. Not all element, only the playlist that appears on the lower side and how they show song track. But as I’ve previously explained,  Tonehighway is now more line social networks than simply a web based music player.

Interesting changes, although for me the new looks becomes too crowded, but it looks like Tonehighway is taking Indonesian market who really likes social element, where there are lots of menu options to be browsed around, not only song player as main facility.

I tried several songs myself and the quality of their music collections is quite good, far better buffer time, and as previously written in DailySocial, now you can replay one song on certain part. Unfortunately their loading (on the site not on the buffer time) is still slow and they need more musics to add. One of the facilities I am looking forward to are song download and buy. There’re buttons for that already, but can not be used yet. It will be interesting to see how their strategy in applying the facility.

Ok, go on and check Tonehighway out to try their new looks and facility, and don’t forget to leave your comment below.

Thanks Daus for the tip.

Video Stabilization Software from SRI Embedded in Google Talk

SRI image stabilization in GTalkGoogle Talk video chat used while walking by SRI researchers on an Android tablet

Image stabilization is a technology commonly used for digital cameras, but here, we are talking about real-time image stabilization for live video streaming, specifically for video chat services, which requires different algorithms and more computing power. Silicon Valley-based SRI International, a nonprofit research and development organization, is announcing that Google Talk for Android 3.0+ devices integrates its 2D video stabilization software. It is fun to video chat while walking using a tablet, but without video stabilization, picture quality is poor since the transmitted images look shaky – I know, I just tried it with an iPad and Skype, the experience was poor. I will update this article with the test "Video Walk with Google Talk on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 ".

SRI International, (formerly Stanford Research Institute) has been widely recognized worldwide for its disruptive inventions, including the first mouse, invented by Douglas Engelbart in his SRI lab in 1963. The Stanford-based institute is also famous for its robotics and artificial intelligence research, specifically for medical applications, a good example is the da Vinci Surgical System.

Pantech Pursuit II arriving on AT&T

Posted: 08 Jul 2011 09:49 PM PDT

Want a new messaging smartphone that does not look as though it hails from the dinosaur age? Here's the Pantech Pursuit II for you from AT&T, where it will arrive on the carrier this coming July 17th, costing a mere $49.99 with a two-year agreement. Needless to say, we think that the form factor and design does reflect the kind of money you fork out for it, what do you say to that?

Specifications-wise, don't expect the earth and the sky, since this Brew Mobile Platform-based handset will come with a mere 2.8? touchscreen display, but the vertical sliding keyboard will surely be appreciated for those who send plenty of emails and text messages. As for the 2-megapixel camera, well, that isn't going to do miracles, but at least it can capture those warm and cosy moments when you do not have a dedicated camera with you.

Colors available are pink or green, perfect to be in tune with this summer. Seems like the perfect 'starter phone' for beginners who are about to upgrade their old school Nokia to something more up to date. [Press Release]
